Indian Chicken Burger

This made a very flavorful dinner! Adapted from More magazine, February 2009. The recipe originally called for cooking in a pan on the stove, but we tried them on the grill and they worked great (and the kitchen didn’t smell!).

Prep time: 10 minutes; Cooking time: 24 minutes; Start to finish: 30 minutes +/-

Ingredients

  • 2 pounds ground chicken
  • 2 garlic cloves, pressed
  • 2 eggs, lightly beaten
  • 2 teaspoons garam masala
  • 1 teaspoon curry powder
  • 1 cup fine dry bread crumbs
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon pepper
  • Vegetable oil for brushing
  • Hamburger buns

Serve with raita (below) and mango chutney (purchased)

Directions

  1. Preheat the grill. Combine the chicken, garlic, eggs, garam masala, curry powder, bread crumbs, salt and pepper in a large bowl, mixing well. Shape the mixture into 8 patties.
  2. Brush the patties with vegetable oil and grill 5 to 6 minutes per side until golden and cooked through.
  3. Serve on toasted hamburger buns with raita and mango chutney. Cucumber and tomato slices are good with the burgers, too.
  4. To make the raita, dice 1 cucumber, place in a colander, sprinkle with salt, and let drain in the sink for 10 minutes.
  5. Meanwhile, combine 2 cups of yogurt, 2 teaspoons cumin, 1 tablespoon chopped fresh mint and 1 cup seeded and diced tomato.
  6. Mix in the cucumber, and season with salt and pepper.

Makes 8 burgers
