Crockpot or Instant Pot Applesauce

Slow or fast – choose your appliance for this recipe. Enjoy the smell of apples cooking all day in the crockpot. Want to make it in 3 minutes? Follow the Instant Pot directions. Either way, this is not your grandmother’s applesauce recipe – the amount of sugar has been greatly reduced, but you won’t miss it at all.

Ingredients

  • 10 baking apples (Granny Smith for example)
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/4 cup water for slow cooker; 1/2 cup water for Instant Pot

Directions (Slow Cooker)

  1. Peel, core and cut up the apples into large chunks.
  2. Mix apples, sugar and cinnamon until apples are well coated.
  3. Add water to the crock pot, then add the apples.
  4. Cook on low for 6-7 hours (high for 4-5).

Directions (Instant Pot)

  1. Peel, core and cut up the apples into large chunks.
  2. Mix apples, sugar and cinnamon until apples are well coated.
  3. Add water to the Instant Pot, then add the apples.
  4. Put the Instant Pot lid on and secure it in the locked position.
  5. Make sure the vent on top of the lid is in the sealed/closed position.
  6. Press Pressure Cook button, making sure it’s on High
  7. Press the “-” sign to decrease the time to 3 (minutes).
  8. When the Instant Pot is done cooking, it will beep to let you know.
  9. Press Cancel, and use the Slow Release method (should take approx 15 minutes)
  10. Carefully remove the lid and pan.
  11. Depending on how you like the applesauce, mash the apples with a fork or use an immersion blender to get it the right smoothness.
  12. Enjoy warm or cold.
